Nudity symbolises woman power: Nandana

Actor Nandana Sen feels nudity portrayed by her in the film Rang Rasiya symbolises woman power.

"Nudity can be depicted in two ways - when you present a women's body as an object then it's demeaning to a women. The way a woman's body has been presented in this film (Rang Rasiya), it

celebrates the power of women," said Nandana here.

Rang RasiyaThe actor said she received hate mail after news of her role was leaked.

"Without knowing what the film was all about, or why I had done the scene, I received hate mail for the scenes. There were objections from different quarters also," she said.

Based on the 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Verma, played by Randeep Hooda, and his muse Sugandha Bai played by Nandana Sen, the film shows how the legendary painter's partially nude portraits irked priests of that era and kicked a controversy.

Nandana gets hate mail for nudity in `Rang Rasiya

Actress Nandana Sen today said she received hate mail and faced objections from different quarters for a nude scene in the period drama `Rang Rasiya` where she plays the muse for 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma.

Sen, who created an uproar four or five years ago after a portrait in which she posed as Goddess Laxmi was leaked while shooting a film, said, "I received hate mail for the scenes. There were objections from different quarters also.

"If a Kate Winslet does a nude scene, it`s okay there. But if it happens in India we create an uproar. What`s wrong in depicting nudity in a dignified way?" asked the actress who has done a backless scene in `Tango Charlie` (2005).

"There are two ways of depicting nudity. One is demeaning to a woman where you objectify her body, while the other one celebrates the power of women," she said while regretting that nudity was still a taboo in India.

"These incidents are similar to what happens with my character Sugandha in the film," said the actress who plays muse to painter Raja Ravi Varma in the biopic.

In the film Sugandha had to face ostracism from society for baring her body as a model for the artist.

Holding that there should be no shame attached to the human body, the film`s director Ketan Mehta said "Sensuality has been an integral part of the Indian culture.

"We are proud of the sculptures and paintings in Khajuraho and Konark. Liberating our minds is important."

I am proud of being the first Indian actress to do a n-u-d-e scene: Nandana Sen

Nandana Sen, the talented actress of Bollywood and daughter of Nobel Laureate Prof Amartya Sen, might not have had a great chance of displaying her acting skills in her past films. But in her forthcoming 'Rang Rasiya', she is all set to surprise us.

Even before the film's release, the actress has already plunged herself into a whirlpool of controversy for using her face as the muse in the first calendar-artiste of the country Ravi Raja Varma's bio-pic 'Rang Rasiya.' However, it didn't deter Sen from doing a nude scene in the film.

When asked about being the first Indian actress to do a nude scene, the actress retorted, "I can't understand what the fuss is about. The nudity is central to the plot. And I completely believed in my director Ketan Mehta's vision."

With ample confidence and her family support, Nandana, comfortably managed to pull out the scene and she takes great pride in having it done.
