The Bollywood heroines these days are scorching the screen with item numbers, but the original item girl, Rakhi Sawant, feels it is an encroachment on her turf.
After Malaika Arora Khan created a rage with `Munni Badnaam Hui` in `Dabangg`, others followed suit: Katrina Kaif (`Sheila Ki Jawani`), Deepika Padukone (`Dum Maro Dum`) and Kareena Kapoor (in upcoming `Ra.One?, in `Chammak Challo`
song).
"As actresses are doing item songs, I am getting fewer offers. I am feeling bad... few item songs are coming my way. I don`t like this," Rakhi told reporters.
"Today an actress plays the main lead, does a negative role, and even an item song to boot. I feel there should be space for everyone in the industry. I started my career with item songs so I can`t become a heroine. But today heroines are becoming item girls."
Rakhi shot to fame with the song `Mohabbat Hai Mirchi` in the film `Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne` (2003). It was followed by `Dekhta hai Tu Kya` in `Krazzy 4`.
Rakhi does not see herself as heroine material. "People have not seen me as a heroine and if I become one, it would shock people. No one wanted to take that chance. Also, I don`t want to become an actress. I feel I have that spice of an item girl. I don`t know if I have the quality for becoming an actress...the girl-next-door types. Kareena and Katrina are heroine material, item songs are forced on them."
Recently, she rejected the offer to do item song with Aamir Khan in `Delhi Belly`. She does not regret that. "There was nothing much interesting for me to do in the song. It was entirely based on Aamir. Even Anusha Dandekar, who is a very popular VJ, is not seen prominently in the song. Even I would not have been visible alongside Aamir....But I am confident had I been there, I would have overshadowed him!"
But the fans need not get disheartened, she will be soon seen sizzling the screen in Suniel Shetty`s upcoming `Loot`.
"I took break for a year. I was waiting for the right song," she said, adding that "I am happy doing the song in `Loot`".
